IEP Advocacy
Know your rights. Know what to ask for.
Your rights as a parent
Right to participate
You are a full equal member of your child's IEP team. No decision can be made without your input.
Say: I would like to table this until I have had time to review it.
Right to request an evaluation
You can request a new or updated evaluation in writing at any time. The school must respond within 60 days.
Say: I am requesting a full evaluation in writing today.
Right to an independent evaluation
If you disagree with the school evaluation you can request an IEE at the school's expense.
Say: I disagree and I am requesting an IEE.
Right to prior written notice
The school must notify you in writing before changing or refusing to change your child's services.
Say: I need that in writing before I agree to anything.
